Weightloss

Since Thanksgiving, I’ve lost roughly 13 pounds. I hit my target 170 pounds today. While I know true success is measured by keeping those pounds off, this milestone feels really good.

I’ve “tried” and failed to lose weight in the past many times. “Tried”, in quotes, because I didn’t actually have a strategy. Mind power, I guess? This time has been the only time I’ve effectively lost weight, and I attribute success exclusively to tracking calories.

Want to lose weight too? Use an app like MyFitnessPal to establish a goal, and meticulously track every single calorie you eat. Every single calorie on every single day. I’ve worked out (30+ minutes of cardio) 3 to 6 days per week my entire life, and calorie tracking is the only way I’ve ever lost weight.

Huge props to Albert Sun for helping me realize I can lose weight too.

Is weight loss the ultimate goal? Is it the best metric to track? Do you know if you’re losing muscle or losing fat? Ultimately – do you feel better now, or it’s too early to tell?

Is weight loss the ultimate goal?

My ultimate goal is to live a long, healthy life with my wife and my kids.

Is it the best metric to track?

Weight may not the best metric, but it strongly correlates with my perceived body image, so I think it’s a reasonable metric to optimize for.

Do you know if you’re losing muscle or losing fat?

I don’t know for certain. Given my exercise regime has increased, I think it’s safe to assume I’m not loosing too much muscle.

Ultimately – do you feel better now, or it’s too early to tell?

Yep — I felt much better even before I hit my target.

Thanks for the answers, Daniel.

In my (admittedly, very narrow) experience it’s a good idea to measure your body fat (calipers sell for less than $10). Almost always when I’ve lost weight, I’ve lost more muscle than fat.

Last, but not least – congratulations 🙂 Feeling good is an upward spiral…
